I like the Harrier a good deal more, because familiarity + national favouritism, but the F-35's VTOL mode is incredibly cool-looking.

Me too. The Harrier is very clean, only the nozzles move; maybe open the gear doors and speedbrake if you're landing. The F-35B is very busy, too many doors and panels moving.
